Purulia is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal with a rich historical background. The district has been inhabited by various indigenous tribes for centuries. The region came under the control of different kingdoms and empires throughout its history.
In ancient times, the region was part of the Mauryan Empire and later the Gupta Empire. During the medieval period, the region was ruled by the Pala dynasty, who were known for their patronage of Buddhism and the arts. The Sena dynasty also had control over Purulia for a brief period.
In the 18th century, the region came under the control of the Maratha Empire. However, the British East India Company gained control of Purulia after defeating the Marathas in the Battle of Plassey in 1757. During British rule, Purulia became a part of the Bengal Presidency and saw significant development in terms of infrastructure and agriculture.
Purulia was also a significant center of the Indian freedom struggle. Many freedom fighters were born in Purulia, including Matangini Hazra, who was killed during a peaceful protest in 1942. The district was also a stronghold of the Communist Party of India, and many peasant movements and uprisings took place in the region.
Today, Purulia is known for its rich cultural heritage, including the Chhau dance, which is a traditional dance form popular in the region. The district is also known for its natural beauty, with forests, hills, and waterfalls attracting many tourists.
